Information webinar on hosting Ukrainian Refugees

Share

Nasc, Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre and Together Razem are hosting an information webinar for people hosting, or considering hosting, Ukrainian refugees in their homes.

The Information Webinar will be held on the 30th March at 7pm and speakers from Nasc and Together Razem will provide information and resources on hosting refugees.

Speaking about the event, Community Sponsorship Officer Nael Saoud, commented "The Community Sponsorship Programme in Ireland has developed training and resources for communities who are welcoming refugees from Syria and Afghanistan. The experience of fleeing war or, even experiencing a forced displacement from your home, can be deeply traumatic for people. We want to share the information and the expertise we've gathered over the years on supporting people who have experienced trauma."

The webinar will offer an opportunity for people to ask questions or offer their own insights or experiences.

Nasc's Nael Saoud will provide an overview of:

  • Recognising and responding to trauma
  • Self-care for hosts

Svetlana from Together Razem will speak to the experience of Ukrainian refugees on arrival in Ireland.

Nael continues, "With this webinar, we really want people to be able to recognise when trauma might be manifesting in people living in their homes and where they can go for support. It's really important that hosts don't take on the responsibility themselves. This is not about becoming a medical professional - it's about recognising and understanding behaviours and being able to respond appropriately and with empathy. We also stress the importance of self-care for hosts. It's really important that people look after their own mental health and wellbeing. We've seen such a huge groundswell of support from the Irish public who want to open their homes. It's incredible and we want to support that and give people some additional tools and resources."

The event will not be recorded to allow people to speak freely of their own experiences of hosting.

Attendance is by advance registration only. Click the Zoom link here to register.
