  • You must be 18 years old or older on Election Day.

  • You must be an Irish citizen to vote in Presidential elections and referendums.

  • EU citizens can vote in European and local elections.

  • Non-EU citizens can vote in local elections only.

How to register to vote: You can register to vote at www.checktheregister.ie. You can check and update your own details on the register at any time of the year. If you need to change or update your details, this can usually be done using an online form. If not, there'll be an form you can request from the registration authority

How do I register to vote if I don't have an address?

If you do not have an address, you can still register to vote with ‘no fixed address’. You'll be asked for an address where you can receive correspondence, and an address where you spend the majority of your time.

What is the deadline to register before an election?

You must have registered, or updated your details, at least 15 days before polling day, (excluding Sundays, Good Friday and Public Holidays) in order to be eligible to vote in that election.
