It is based on a simple idea: communities can play a direct role in offering protection, inclusion and support. Rather than relying solely on state systems, groups of volunteers come together to help a refugee family settle into their new community.
Nasc supports communities to take part in this programme and provides guidance throughout the process.
What is Community Sponsorship?
Under the Community Sponsorship programme, a local group commits to supporting a refugee family for an initial period after their arrival in Ireland. This includes helping them to access housing, services, education, healthcare and employment opportunities, and supporting their integration into community life.
The programme works in partnership with the Irish Government and international protection frameworks. Refugees arriving through Community Sponsorship already have recognised protection status.
The role of the community group is to provide structured, practical support that enables families to settle safely and confidently.
What Does a Community Group Do?
Community Sponsorship is about coordinated, practical action. A group will:
• Secure suitable accommodation for the family
• Provide orientation to the local area
• Offer social and community connection
Why Get Involved?
Many people want to respond constructively to global displacement but are unsure how to do so. Community Sponsorship offers a tangible way to act.
It allows local communities to:
• Provide a safe and stable start for a refugee family
• Build inclusive and welcoming neighbourhoods
• Develop meaningful community connections
• Contribute directly to Ireland’s protection response
For the families arriving, it provides not only accommodation but social support, stability and early integration.
